Call for Proposals

2017 CAPDHHE National Conference

Call for Proposals 2017
The Canadian Association for the Prevention of Discrimination and Harassment in Higher Education (CAPDHHE) is calling for presenters for the 2017 CAPDHHE National Conference.

Dialogue on Inclusion: Solutions for College and University Campuses

Date: June 7-9, 2017

Location: Montpetit Hall, 125 University Private, University of Ottawa, Ottawa, Ontario

June 7, 2017 is a pre-conference day, which will be of interest to CAPDHHE members and beyond. Please save the date in your calendar and stay tuned for details!
June 8 & 9, 2017 is devoted to the main conference and will focus on the challenges of human rights work in the post-secondary sector.

This call for proposals is intended for sessions that take place during the main conference, not the pre-conference.

Presenters will be invited to share practical tools and strategies to

  1. Prevent discrimination, sexual harassment, sexual assault, and stalking on campus;
  2. Address the opportunities and complexities of human rights work at a time when issues of competing rights, subtle forms of discrimination, and community-based activism can create highly charged environments; and
  3. Explore how the growing body of research including unconscious bias can be incorporated into changing cultures and creating more equitable and inclusive learning, working, and living campus environments.

Proposals that align with the conference theme and support participants in their practice will be prioritized for selection.

We are particularly interested in proposals that address the following key topics:

  • The experience of Black and racialized students, staff, and faculty on campuses across North America with regard to systemic oppression, academic freedom, and diversity initiatives.
  • Indigenizing Canadian Campuses, in conversation with the Truth and Reconciliation Commission Calls to Action and the UNDRIP.
  • Addressing and combatting Islamophobia on Canadian campuses.
  • Establishing safe and inclusive campus communities for Trans* and gender diverse persons on Canadian campuses.
  • Preventing and responding to sexual violence on campus.

Each session will be 75 minutes in duration and the rooms can accommodate up to 30 participants. The Planning Committee reserves the right to limit the number of participants in each session.

Hosted in the nation’s capital, during the Canada 150 celebrations by the University of Ottawa, CAPDHHE 2017 will welcome presenters and delegates from different regions, languages, and social locations to give voice to the changing climate of equity work throughout the country and beyond.

We invite you to submit a proposal (PDF) to present at the conference by Friday, February 10, 2017.

If you have any questions or require further clarification as you develop your proposal, please contact: Milé Komlen at komlenm@mcmaster.ca or Sonya Nigam at snigam@uottawa.ca.

The Planning Committee will respond to all proposals no later than February 28, 2017.
